<p><br></p><p>So you’ve written a book and now you’re ready to get it published. Congratulations! Getting a book published is a challenging but incredibly rewarding process. Whether you’re looking to go the traditional route with a publishing house or considering self-publishing, there are several key steps to keep in mind.</p><p><strong>1. Refine Your Manuscript</strong></p><p>Before you start the publishing process, it’s crucial to ensure that your manuscript is polished and ready for submission. Consider seeking feedback from beta readers or hiring a professional editor to help refine your work. There is just no point in sending on a poorly presented manuscript to anyone! I have lost count of the number of truly awful 'finished books' we have received from around the world. People. Please. Spend time polishing and crafting.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-e023mcuyoqls1ry73g"><img id="e023mcuyoqls1ry73g" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1662979239277-36db568f65ad?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMXx8Ym9vayUyMG1hbnVzY3JpcHR8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2NzA0NzYyfDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="book manuscript" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1662979239277-36db568f65ad?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMXx8Ym9vayUyMG1hbnVzY3JpcHR8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2NzA0NzYyfDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><p><strong>2. Research Publishing Options</strong></p><p>There are various routes to getting your book published, including traditional publishing, hybrid publishing, and self-publishing. Take the time to research each option and determine which aligns best with your goals and expectations. Each of these routes has advantages and disadvantages. For me, as an author and indie publisher, 'control' would be my primary concern and not, perhaps strangely, money. &nbsp;</p><p><strong>3. Prepare a Query Letter or Book Proposal</strong></p><p>If you’re pursuing traditional publishing, you’ll likely need to prepare a query letter or book proposal to send to literary agents or publishing houses. This document should effectively pitch your book and entice potential publishers to request your manuscript. There are many templates on the Internet for this activity and it is worth spending time crafting the most amazing letters possible!&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-m76n1bjssmls1ry8b0"><img id="m76n1bjssmls1ry8b0" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1492052722242-2554d0e99e3a?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNHx8cXVlcnklMjBsZXR0ZXIlMjBib29rJTIwcHJvcG9zYWx8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2NzA0NzY0fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="query letter book proposal" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1492052722242-2554d0e99e3a?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNHx8cXVlcnklMjBsZXR0ZXIlMjBib29rJTIwcHJvcG9zYWx8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2NzA0NzY0fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><p><strong>4. Build Your Author Platform</strong></p><p>Regardless of the publishing route you choose, having a strong author platform can significantly impact your book’s success. Consider building an online presence through social media, a professional website, and engaging with potential readers. Traditional houses just won't take on the 'ordinary citizen' who doesn't spend time building their own platforms. It's like anything in life, you get back what you put in. Sending on a letter and manuscript and simply 'manifesting' doesn't work in my experience.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>5. Understand the Publishing Process</strong></p><p>Once you’ve secured a publishing deal or decided to self-publish, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the publishing process. This includes understanding all aspects of editing, design, distribution, and marketing aspects of the journey. And, it is a looooooong journey my friends.</p><p><strong>6. Protect Your Work</strong></p><p>Before submitting your manuscript to publishers or releasing it for self-publishing, consider copyrighting your work to protect your intellectual property. Understanding your rights as an author is essential in the publishing world.</p><figure id="figure-rkokutrir6els1ry9m7"><img id="rkokutrir6els1ry9m7" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1535957998253-26ae1ef29506?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyNnx8cHJvdGVjdCUyMHlvdXIlMjB3b3JrJTIwY29weXJpZ2h0fGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjcwNDc2NXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="protect your work copyright" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1535957998253-26ae1ef29506?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyNnx8cHJvdGVjdCUyMHlvdXIlMjB3b3JrJTIwY29weXJpZ2h0fGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjcwNDc2NXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><p><strong>7. Network with Other Authors</strong></p><p>Connecting with fellow authors can provide valuable insights and support throughout the publishing process. Consider joining writer’s groups, attending literary events, and engaging with the writing community both online and offline.</p><p><strong>8. Be Persistent and Resilient</strong></p><p>Rejection is an all-too-common part of the publishing journey, but persistence and resilience are key. Keep refining your craft, seeking feedback, and pushing forward in pursuit of your publishing goals.</p>

<h2>Understanding Author Royalties in Traditional Publishing</h2><p>For many writers, the dream of seeing their work in print is closely tied to the expectation of earning (substantial)royalties from their sales. In traditional publishing, <strong>author royalties</strong> are a fundamental part of the author's compensation, but the specifics can often be complex and confusing and differ from house to house and territory to territory. In this post, I'll demystify how royalties work in the traditional publishing landscape where we have offered many traditional contracts over the years.</p><figure id="figure-n070825pldlrtjs3zs"><img id="n070825pldlrtjs3zs" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1468779036391-52341f60b55d?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNnx8YXV0aG9yJTIwcm95YWx0aWVzJTIwYm9va3xlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYyMDczMTJ8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="author royalties book" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1468779036391-52341f60b55d?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNnx8YXV0aG9yJTIwcm95YWx0aWVzJTIwYm9va3xlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYyMDczMTJ8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>What Are Author Royalties?</h3><p>Author royalties are a percentage of the book's sales that publishers pay to authors as their earnings - after they recoup their costs. These royalties are negotiated and outlined in the publishing contract. Royalties are typically based on either the retail price of the book or the net price, which is the sales revenue minus costs like discounts, returns, and distribution fees.</p><figure id="figure-fflhnxlxk8lrtm0hzx"><img id="fflhnxlxk8lrtm0hzx" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/4Py2vItKB7hk7bY0Ou63uq4qSXYmFOqJAqktBmkW6y7eDUkU4fz34MWjyyWnTjcU.jpeg" alt="Diary with words I wonder, and an heart, concept of desire" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="undefined" data-positiony="undefined" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/29eVXKM1RiojeSX23xfs6GbNorFQ3qzPTFfauajPtGY9VoMqMCR2O6d5yWcMIjxY.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><p><br></p><p><br></p><h3>Types of Royalties</h3><p>There are several types of royalties that authors may encounter:</p><ul><li><strong>Hardcover royalties</strong>: These are usually the highest, often ranging from 10% to 15% of the book's retail price.</li><li><strong>Paperback royalties</strong>: Slightly lower than hardcover, paperback royalties typically fall between 6% and 8% of the retail price.</li><li><strong>Ebook royalties</strong>: These can vary widely but are often set at a higher percentage, sometimes up to 20%/25% of the net sale price.</li></ul><p>It's important to note that these percentages can be subject to negotiation and may vary depending on the publisher and the author's bargaining power, which differs hugely from author to author, as one might expect. An international sports star with 100,000 social media followers will command more royalties than someone who isn't known at all, isn't on social media and is writing their first book.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-exmx83edm5lrtjsegi"><img id="exmx83edm5lrtjsegi" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1492052722242-2554d0e99e3a?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxN3x8aGFyZGNvdmVyJTIwYm9vayUyMHN0YWNrfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjIwNzMyNXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="hardcover book stack" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1492052722242-2554d0e99e3a?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxN3x8aGFyZGNvdmVyJTIwYm9vayUyMHN0YWNrfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjIwNzMyNXww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Advances Against Royalties</h3><p>Many traditional publishing deals include an <strong>advance</strong>, which is a sum of money paid to the author before the book is published. This advance is essentially a pre-payment of royalties, which the author must then "earn out" through book sales before receiving additional royalty payments. If the book doesn't earn enough to cover the advance, the author isn't required to pay back the difference. Advances can range from a couple of hundred euros to thousands to over €100,000. Again, this depends on what potential the publisher perceives the author and book have in the market. And, it's all about the market. So many publishers (including us) have offered traditional contracts, done all the work associated with this and then lost money because a book doesn't sell. &nbsp;</p><h3>Understanding the Royalty Rate</h3><p>The royalty rate is the agreed-upon percentage that determines how much authors will earn per book sold. This rate is crucial and should be clearly stated in the publishing contract. Authors should pay close attention to whether the rate is based on the book's retail price or net price, as this can significantly impact earnings.</p><figure id="figure-n8lyd70d69lrtjsn8j"><img id="n8lyd70d69lrtjsn8j" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/7XzpgKoAwZ5AnOkQHnXaJlmjevMnQQPUgxIddBbnnzMZutc6XHdbT54REBA5sFgq.jpeg" alt="Portrait of the pinup woman with books on white background" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/27HuT2xp3ghvM21vujUEEDQ5Oqolo2kB39lfCyOl3Dxtq28l8fFCZ1h2Jf9OQvWG.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h3>Royalty Statements and Payments</h3><p>Authors receive royalty statements from their publishers, typically on a semi-annual or annual basis. These statements provide a detailed breakdown of sales and returns, and the corresponding royalties owed. Payments are then made to the author based on the schedule outlined in the contract. It's vital for authors to <strong>review these statements carefully</strong> to ensure accuracy.</p><h3>Subsidiary Rights and Royalties</h3><p>Beyond the basic royalties from direct book sales, authors can also earn from subsidiary rights. These include rights for things like:</p><ul><li>Foreign language editions</li><li>Audiobooks</li><li>Film or television adaptations</li><li>Mercandise</li></ul><p>Each of these rights can be sold separately, and the royalties earned from them can be an important additional revenue stream for authors.</p><figure id="figure-og9kpq18pslrtjswvm"><img id="og9kpq18pslrtjswvm" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1667312939934-60fc3bfa4ec0?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxN3x8Zm9yZWlnbiUyMGxhbmd1YWdlJTIwYm9va3N8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2MjA3MzQ5fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="foreign language books" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1667312939934-60fc3bfa4ec0?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxN3x8Zm9yZWlnbiUyMGxhbmd1YWdlJTIwYm9va3N8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA2MjA3MzQ5fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Common Royalty Pitfalls</h3><p>There are common pitfalls that authors should be aware of when it comes to royalties. These include the potential for returns, which can eat into earned royalties, and the "reserve against returns," where publishers hold back a portion of royalties in anticipation of future returns. It's also important to understand escalators, which are clauses in the contract that can increase royalty rates after certain sales milestones are reached.</p><figure id="figure-1v8spd6k9mlrtm23bd"><img id="1v8spd6k9mlrtm23bd" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/a7t7ZeDgHbolTUyWdGC0NGhO9FzZvv5SEvaMLeryXvpGmobaZlL9Bnsc1KGoBFQY.jpeg" alt="Closeup of business man sitting at desk with his hands clasped. With the right knowledge and negotiation tactics, authors can navigate the complexities of royalties and make the most out of their publishing deals.</p>

How Do Author Royalties in Traditional Publishing Work?

<h2>The Imperative of Sustainability in Indie Publishing</h2><p>As an indie publisher, you may be hyper-focused on the literary quality of your content, the efficiency of your distribution, and the satisfaction of your readership. However, there's an equally important aspect that's gaining traction in the publishing world: <strong>sustainability</strong>. Integrating sustainability policies into your business model isn't just good for the planet—it's also becoming a critical factor in the success and longevity of indie publishers. We have an Environment and Sustainability Officer in place, Clara Quinn, located in our Lund, Sweden office.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-q5owfc8ucnlrrv1cuk"><img id="q5owfc8ucnlrrv1cuk" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1558449028-b53a39d100fc?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyNnx8c3VzdGFpbmFibGUlMjBwdWJsaXNoaW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjEwNTI4N3ww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="sustainable publishing" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1558449028-b53a39d100fc?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyNnx8c3VzdGFpbmFibGUlMjBwdWJsaXNoaW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwNjEwNTI4N3ww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Understanding the Environmental Impact</h3><p>Indie publishers, like all businesses, leave a carbon footprint. From the paper used in printed books to the energy consumed during production, every step in the publishing process has environmental implications. By adopting sustainability policies, indie publishers can significantly reduce their ecological impact. This not only benefits the environment but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and practices. This, Clara has been tasked with drawing up new initiatives based on best emerging practice for us.&nbsp;</p><h3>Cost Savings and Efficiency</h3><p>Implementing sustainable practices often leads to increased efficiency and cost savings. For instance, using recycled paper or optimising print runs to reduce waste can lower production costs. Additionally, digital distribution channels, such as e-books and online platforms, can decrease the need for physical materials altogether, further cutting expenses and environmental impact. We have creating our books as both printed and e-book formats but we're doing some of our 2024 titles only as e-books which is a new departure for our business.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-v5oyifx7mhlrrv1kju"><img id="v5oyifx7mhlrrv1kju" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bl6eGjYh2hNoKN7KCFhYKCRxgAMb1Cy7AUgf7P9lMmGxodLd1lJhV5TDmUE2nhM.png" alt="cost savings" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bl6eGjYh2hNoKN7KCFhYKCRxgAMb1Cy7AUgf7P9lMmGxodLd1lJhV5TDmUE2nhM.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h3>Enhancing Brand Image and Reputation</h3><p>Today's readers are more conscious of the ethical implications of their purchases. As an indie publisher, having strong sustainability policies can significantly enhance your brand image. It demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility and sets you apart in a competitive market. This can lead to increased loyalty from readers who prioritise sustainability, and can even attract new audiences. Indeed, we recently published a book titled 'It's A Wrap. Conversations On Plastic' by Anne Hayden, MSc. with several guest chapters all looking at various aspects of sustainability. None of our books are wrapped in plastic!&nbsp;</p><h3>Long-Term Viability and Adaptability</h3><p>Sustainability isn't just a trend; it's a shift in the way businesses operate. By adopting sustainability policies now, indie publishers can ensure their long-term viability. Adapting to the changing market demands and regulatory environments that increasingly favour sustainable practices can safeguard your business against future risks and disruptions.</p><figure id="figure-aonvgc8i4olrrv1q32"><img id="aonvgc8i4olrrv1q32" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1505264081973-ef84beba20ec?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw3fHxsb25nJTIwdGVybSUyMHZpYWJpbGl0eXxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYxMDUzMDN8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="long term viability" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1505264081973-ef84beba20ec?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHw3fHxsb25nJTIwdGVybSUyMHZpYWJpbGl0eXxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYxMDUzMDN8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Collaboration and Community Engagement</h3><p>Indie publishers often operate within tight-knit communities. By promoting sustainability, you can lead by example and encourage other community members, including writers, readers, and suppliers, to follow suit. This collaborative approach can amplify the positive impact and help build a more sustainable industry as a whole.</p><h3>Meeting Regulatory Requirements</h3><p>As governments worldwide implement stricter environmental regulations, having sustainability policies in place can help indie publishers stay ahead of the curve. Compliance with these regulations can prevent legal issues and fines, and can also qualify your business for incentives and subsidies designed to promote sustainable practices.</p><figure id="figure-20wsqimo6llrrv1vap"><img id="20wsqimo6llrrv1vap" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1701534979355-7c03953df1bd?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzfHxyZWd1bGF0b3J5JTIwY29tcGxpYW5jZXxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYxMDUzMTB8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="regulatory compliance" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1701534979355-7c03953df1bd?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzfHxyZWd1bGF0b3J5JTIwY29tcGxpYW5jZXxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDYxMDUzMTB8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Attracting Talent and Partnerships</h3><p>Many professionals are looking to work with companies that share their values. For indie publishers, sustainability policies can be a deciding factor in attracting talented authors, editors, and other industry professionals. Moreover, these policies can open doors to partnerships with eco-conscious organizations, further expanding your network and opportunities.</p><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>In conclusion, sustainability policies are no longer optional for indie publishers who want to thrive in today's market. They offer a host of benefits, from cost savings and improved brand image to regulatory compliance and community engagement. By prioritizing sustainability, indie publishers can ensure the longevity of their business while making a positive impact on the planet and society. It's a win-win scenario that's worth the investment for a greener, more responsible future in publishing.</p>

<h2>Understanding the Importance of Formatting</h2><p>The whole process of writing a book is a complex task that requires a lot (and I mean 'a lot') of dedication and attention to detail. However, once the writing is done, my experience over the years in indie publishing is that all too many authors overlook a crucial step: formatting. Proper book formatting is essential for creating a professional and polished final product. It can significantly impact the reader's experience and affect the overall perception of your work. <strong>Don't underestimate the importance of formatting!&nbsp;</strong></p><figure id="figure-sdi0p4wq7jlrkvyn5h"><img id="sdi0p4wq7jlrkvyn5h" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1491841573634-28140fc7ced7?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8Ym9vayUyMGZvcm1hdHRpbmd8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA1NjgzNTc2fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="book formatting" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1491841573634-28140fc7ced7?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8Ym9vayUyMGZvcm1hdHRpbmd8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA1NjgzNTc2fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Choosing the Right Format</h2><p>Before you format your book, it's important to decide which format you want to use and reasons for this. There are several formats available, such as PDF, EPUB, MOBI, etc. and the choice depends on where you plan to publish your book. For instance, if you're self-publishing on Amazon, you'll want to opt for the MOBI format, while EPUB is widely accepted on many other platforms.</p><h3>PDF Format</h3><p>PDF is a popular format for both digital and print books. It preserves your layout and design, making it a great choice for books with complex formatting or a lot of images. However, it's not easily reflowable, which means it may not provide the best reading experience on smaller screens.</p><h3>EPUB and MOBI Format</h3><p>EPUB and MOBI are reflowable formats, meaning they can adapt to different screen sizes and devices. This makes them a better choice for text-heavy books, like novels. They also support interactive features and multimedia, which can enhance the reader's experience.</p><figure id="figure-y4yd2bjrtlrkvyxlh"><img id="y4yd2bjrtlrkvyxlh" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1704110347754-4969a6b91362?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzfHxlYm9vayUyMGZvcm1hdHN8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA1NjgzNTkwfDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="ebook formats" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1704110347754-4969a6b91362?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwzfHxlYm9vayUyMGZvcm1hdHN8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzA1NjgzNTkwfDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Formatting the Interior of Your Book</h2><p>Formatting the interior of your book involves several elements, including margins, line spacing, font type and size, headers and footers, page numbers, and more. It's crucial to pay attention to these details to ensure your book is easy to read and looks professional. I've come across so many books that were printed on Amazon that look horrendous! In fact, they look like they've been set up by toddlers with spacing issues throughout the books, inconsistent spelling moving between British/Irish and US spelling, drops downs changing every chapter, etc.&nbsp;</p><h3>Text Layout</h3><p>So, following on from my above observation, for text layout, consistency is key. Use the same font type and size throughout your book. A common choice is a 12-point serif font for the main text and a sans-serif font for the headings. Line spacing should be set to 1.5 for ease of reading.</p><figure id="figure-f0k7wa5zd7lrkvzc0q"><img id="f0k7wa5zd7lrkvzc0q" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1615999106682-093ac6c98f90?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyMXx8dGV4dCUyMGxheW91dHxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDU2ODM2MDl8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="text layout" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1615999106682-093ac6c98f90?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwyMXx8dGV4dCUyMGxheW91dHxlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDU2ODM2MDl8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h3>Headers, Footers, and Page Numbers</h3><p>Headers and footers are used to display information like the book title, chapter title, and author name. They add a professional touch to your book and help guide the reader. Page numbers are also important for easy navigation, especially in print books. I've added in little flourishes in some books I've worked on including, for example, an outline image of a running man on each right-hand page for a book that had a theme of a gruelling desert race (check out 'Baby Dara And The Sahara' by Barry Loftus/Book Hub Publishing/2023).&nbsp;</p><h2>Formatting the Cover</h2><p>Last but not least, don't forget about your book cover. The cover is the first thing potential readers see, so it needs to be eye-catching and professional. It should also reflect the content and tone of your book. You can design your own cover or hire a professional to do it for you.</p><figure id="figure-cngsa82mnolrkvzi71"><img id="cngsa82mnolrkvzi71" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bJ6uyMvd6kbb3TnrGBfgl9gYV41FK5uMrKXn9EQmCuB3biYEkjKu3JT4QZIxueM.png" alt="book cover design" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/3bJ6uyMvd6kbb3TnrGBfgl9gYV41FK5uMrKXn9EQmCuB3biYEkjKu3JT4QZIxueM.png" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h2>Final Thoughts</h2><p>Formatting your book might seem like a daunting task, but it's a crucial step in the publishing process. With careful attention to detail and a bit of patience, you can create a well-formatted book that will impress your readers and enhance their reading experience.</p><p><br></p>

<h2>Understanding the Market</h2><p>I had a recent email exchange with a poet I work with on the theme of difficulties in achieving sales, which has prompted this blog. When it comes to selling poetry, understanding your market is crucial. Poetry, unlike other literary forms, appeals to a niche audience. It's important to know who your readers are, what they like, and how they consume poetry. Are they traditionalists who prefer hardcover books, or do they enjoy digital content? Do they lean towards classic themes or contemporary issues? The answers to these questions should guide your sales strategy.</p><figure id="figure-q83eso57iflrfdjlu7"><img id="q83eso57iflrfdjlu7" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/2aPyo4zlCg2mTSWxKEj99Yk2JfyYwo69z4buzBNZBcIW6KA3iO5luBeR6KbUqV7n.jpeg" alt="word poetry printed on white paper macro" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/39V3CKr7ZP9b70JAKre9lnhhb5sZPA8aFg5GSTiPGX5VZojy084x8A0q96TkOJQk.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h2>Creating Quality Content</h2><p>Quality is key in poetry. Your work needs to resonate with readers and evoke emotion. <strong>Consistently delivering high-quality content</strong> will help build your reputation, attract more readers, and, ultimately, drive sales. To improve your craft, consider joining poetry workshops, reading widely, and seeking feedback from other poets.</p><figure id="figure-aikf7adc47lrfdjram"><img id="aikf7adc47lrfdjram" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/30xnpluPjBaBrTFDzFhpzMrh0cHTp6ZUdStAftzNk8D2dWDAX7bdJFR5X2hI0oZW.jpeg" alt="Women hand using smartphone do online shopping screen with many icons

A website or blog where you showcase your work can reach a global audience. Social media platforms like TikTok, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter are also effective tools for promoting your poetry. Regularly post your work, engage with your followers, and be part of the poetry community online.</p><h3>Utilising Social Media</h3><p>Platforms like Instagram have given rise to a new generation of poets. The platform's emphasis on visuals and concise content makes it ideal for sharing short, impactful poems. <strong>Instagram poetry</strong> has gained popularity over the years, with poets like Rupi Kaur amassing millions of followers. Twitter, with its character limit, also encourages brevity and can be a great platform for sharing haikus and micro-poetry.</p><figure id="figure-kp21ewc3r8lrfdk2sn"><img id="kp21ewc3r8lrfdk2sn" src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/33GgzIgwX93d8yX13fIq3CeRnBgDwZRyyJ28Uanj1R7rhlmz9giMBzigRhw9CUpf.jpeg" alt="Publish Word Written In Wooden Cube" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;" data-corners="default" data-aspect="16:9" data-caption="" data-positionx="null" data-positiony="null" data-mce-src="https://cdn.durable.co/shutterstock/2fEWoav1lD4QhObGcoeZv8AezZEXLEcn4IET0sOnLQmBcESLtDkoFycTuxK2iFyy.jpeg" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h2>Publishing Your Work</h2><p>There are several avenues to publish your poetry. Self-publishing is a popular route, giving poets full control over their work, from content to cover design to pricing. However, it also means handling all the marketing and distribution efforts post completion of the design and editing journey. In my experience, many poets just don't have the energy or commitment to do this and then get disappointed with lack of sales. Traditional publishing, on the other hand, provides wider distribution but is very often much harder to break into.</p><h3>Exploring Poetry Contests and Anthologies</h3><p>Here's something I've found very useful. A way to get your work out there to the public is through targeted (and I do mean targeted) poetry contests and anthologies. Winning or even placing in a reputable contest can significantly boost your visibility in the poetry community and gives you an opportunity to use your social media. Anthologies, which are collections of poems by various authors, also provide exposure and are often seen as a stepping stone to publishing a full collection.</p><figure id="figure-6ioy1tgxclrfdkcal"><img id="6ioy1tgxclrfdkcal" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1583265627959-fb7042f5133b?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8cG9ldHJ5JTIwcHVibGlzaGluZ3xlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDUzNTAzNDV8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="poetry publishing" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1583265627959-fb7042f5133b?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8cG9ldHJ5JTIwcHVibGlzaGluZ3xlbnwwfHx8fDE3MDUzNTAzNDV8MA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Connecting with Your Audience</h2><p>Lastly, connecting with your audience is integral to your sales success. Attend poetry readings, engage with your readers online, and be open to feedback. Remember, poetry is a form of communication. The stronger your connection with your audience, the more likely they are to support your work.</p>

<h2>The Power of Psychology in Writing Books</h2><p>Psychology is not just a subject studied in colleges and universities. It is a powerful tool that we can use in our daily lives to understand ourselves and others better and it is certainly useful as a tool we can use in our books. From enhancing our communication skills to improving our decision-making, the application of psychological principles can enhance our personal and professional lives and our storytelling. I've been using psychology for years, having first formally studied the discipline in the early 1990s.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-0ok6ih7jvlpv1n0g6"><img id="0ok6ih7jvlpv1n0g6" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1534780095212-50d9b889f780?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxOXx8cHN5Y2hvbG9neSUyMGNvbmNlcHR8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzAxOTQ0MjA5fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="psychology concept" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1534780095212-50d9b889f780?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxOXx8cHN5Y2hvbG9neSUyMGNvbmNlcHR8ZW58MHx8fHwxNzAxOTQ0MjA5fDA&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Improving Communication</h2><p>One of the key areas where psychology can be usefully applied is communication. By understanding the psychological principles behind how people interpret information and respond to it, we can become more effective communicators. This involves being aware of both verbal and non-verbal cues and understanding how our words and actions can impact others. But how do we bring this into our books and our storytelling? Well, with caution and by using the 'right' principles at the 'right' time in your book. By this I mean, don't just throw in psychological phrases or theories. Ensure they 'fit'. Ensure they are clear. And ensure they are not either outdated or just plain wrong.&nbsp;</p><h3>The Role of Active Listening</h3><p>Active listening is a psychological technique that involves fully focusing on, understanding, and responding to a speaker. It goes beyond simply hearing what someone is saying – it involves showing empathy and understanding, which can greatly improve our personal and professional relationships. Try to use this with your characters and allow them to evolve as your book gathers momentum.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-5ejcxxa4ko3lpv1n4ec"><img id="5ejcxxa4ko3lpv1n4ec" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1527701758614-2b486f8c0d29?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8YWN0aXZlJTIwbGlzdGVuaW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIxNHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="active listening" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1527701758614-2b486f8c0d29?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxM3x8YWN0aXZlJTIwbGlzdGVuaW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIxNHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Enhancing Decision-Making</h2><p>We can also apply psychology to improve our decision-making skills. By understanding cognitive biases – systematic errors in thinking that can affect our decisions and judgments – we can make more rational and informed decisions. For instance, understanding the confirmation bias (the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs) can help us to be more open-minded and considerate of different perspectives. A great example of this is the Victorian detective, Sherlock Holmes, who always sought evidence, and we see this in modern crime novels. The great crime novel characters (I'm thinking here of John Connolly's Charlie Parker) always look at the evidence and are prepared to both research and change their minds when presented with evidence. &nbsp;</p><h3>Understanding the Impact of Emotions</h3><p>Emotions can influence our decision-making process. By understanding this, we can ensure that we are not making impulsive decisions based on temporary emotions, but making rational decisions based on careful consideration. How often do we see characters acting impulsively when they could have stepped back and more objectively examined and assessed a situation they find themselves in? Of course, sometimes we want our characters to act impulsively as it adds drama and intrigue. But always aim for consistency in this depiction.&nbsp;</p><figure id="figure-tyvoynv456lpv1n9ap"><img id="tyvoynv456lpv1n9ap" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1516302752625-fcc3c50ae61f?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNXx8ZW1vdGlvbiUyMGRlY2lzaW9uJTIwbWFraW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIyMHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="emotion decision making" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1516302752625-fcc3c50ae61f?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxNXx8ZW1vdGlvbiUyMGRlY2lzaW9uJTIwbWFraW5nfGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIyMHww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><h2>Boosting Motivation and Productivity</h2><p>Psychology can also enhance our motivation and productivity. Understanding what motivates us, how to set achievable goals, and how to manage our time effectively are all psychological principles that can help us be more productive in our personal and professional lives. This applies to the book writing journey as much as anything else in life.&nbsp;</p><h3>The Power of Positive Reinforcement</h3><p>Positive reinforcement is a psychological principle that involves adding a positive stimulus to encourage a behaviour. This could be something as simple as rewarding ourselves with a break after completing a difficult chapter, which can significantly boost our motivation and productivity to continue on in our book writing journey.</p><figure id="figure-7tkuddewjjlpv1nbx1"><img id="7tkuddewjjlpv1nbx1" src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1549633030-89d0743bad01?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMnx8cG9zaXRpdmUlMjByZWluZm9yY2VtZW50fGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIyM3ww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" alt="positive reinforcement" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 " style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;" data-mce-src="https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1549633030-89d0743bad01?crop=entropy&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;fit=max&amp;fm=jpg&amp;ixid=M3wyNjI5NjF8MHwxfHNlYXJjaHwxMnx8cG9zaXRpdmUlMjByZWluZm9yY2VtZW50fGVufDB8fHx8MTcwMTk0NDIyM3ww&amp;ixlib=rb-4.0.3&amp;q=80&amp;w=1080" data-mce-style="aspect-ratio: 16/9;"></figure><p>In conclusion, psychology is a powerful tool that can be applied in various aspects of our daily lives, including our lives as authors and bloggers. By understanding and applying a range of psychological principles, we can become better communicators, make more informed decisions, and enhance our motivation and productivity. All of us want to complete books we write, and there are easier and harder ways of making this happen. Psychology is definitely my friend in this endeavour.</p>
