Refine Your Manuscript</strong></p><p>Before you start the publishing process, it’s crucial to ensure that your manuscript is polished and ready for submission. Consider seeking feedback from beta readers or hiring a professional editor to help refine your work. There is just no point in sending on a poorly presented manuscript to anyone! I have lost count of the number of truly awful 'finished books' we have received from around the world. People. Please. This includes understanding all aspects of editing, design, distribution, and marketing aspects of the journey. And, it is a looooooong journey my friends.</p><p><strong>6. Protect Your Work</strong></p><p>Before submitting your manuscript to publishers or releasing it for self-publishing, consider copyrighting your work to protect your intellectual property. It's crucial to pay attention to these details to ensure your book is easy to read and looks professional. I've come across so many books that were printed on Amazon that look horrendous! In fact, they look like they've been set up by toddlers with spacing issues throughout the books, inconsistent spelling moving between British/Irish and US spelling, drops downs changing every chapter, etc.&nbsp;</p><h3>Text Layout</h3><p>So, following on from my above observation, for text layout, consistency is key. Use the same font type and size throughout your book. A common choice is a 12-point serif font for the main text and a sans-serif font for the headings. In my experience, many poets just don't have the energy or commitment to do this and then get disappointed with lack of sales. Traditional publishing, on the other hand, provides wider distribution but is very often much harder to break into.</p><h3>Exploring Poetry Contests and Anthologies</h3><p>Here's something I've found very useful. A way to get your work out there to the public is through targeted (and I do mean targeted) poetry contests and anthologies. Winning or even placing in a reputable contest can significantly boost your visibility in the poetry community and gives you an opportunity to use your social media.
