<p>Have you ever sat down and thought about paperback versus ebooks? Which is better for the environment? Which is a more 'genuine' product? Well, we publish our books with ShadowScript Publications in both paper and ebook versions, but we have given this a lot of thought over recent months.&nbsp;</p><p>Ebooks have become increasingly popular in recent years, offering readers a convenient and portable way to access a wide range of literature. At least, that's what the ads happily tell us. I know this is only one book, but there are quite a lot of Americans! Sales of printed books in 2020 topped 200 million, the highest number since 2012.</p><p>Ebook sales revenue in the US was estimated to reach $4.23 billion in 2023. 38.7% of people aged 18-29 in the United States read e-books in 2020. Ebooks made up 18% of the US trade book market in 2021. With a single e-reader or tablet, readers can carry an entire library with them wherever they travel, making it easy to access a variety of books on the go. An average text-only ebook takes up between 1MB and 2MB storage space, meaning an 8GB Kindle can store between 3,000 and 6,000 Ebooks. In fact, higher-end models with 32GB or more can store tens of thousands of Ebooks. I regularly pop my Ebook into my leather satchel along with my MacBook and notebook assured I have hundreds of hours of entertainment ahead of me.&nbsp;</p><p>Another benefit of Ebooks is the ability to customize the reading experience. Readers can adjust font sizes, styles, and brightness levels to suit their preferences, making it easier for individuals with visual impairments to enjoy reading. I find this a really useful facility, as do many of my friends.&nbsp;</p><p>A huge supposed benefit is that ebooks also offer a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional printed books. By reducing the need for paper and ink, digital books contribute to conservation efforts and help minimize the impact on the environment, and the stats on this are staggering. A single metric tonne of paper requires around 17 trees – an average of 59 kilos of paper per tree. To put this in context, an average 400-page paperback weighs about 600 grams. And, one tree can generate only 100 paperback books. Let's look a little closer. A key question is, are ebooks really as environmentally friendly as people claim? Well, it might be surprising, but the short answer is no. Researchers estimate that almost 299 litres of water are needed to make a single EReader. That's a lot of water.&nbsp;</p><p>Another concern is the potential for digital eye strain, which can occur during prolonged screen time when reading on electronic devices. We've all been there...Outside in the sunshine and it's hard to see the screen compared to print on a page in a paperback book.&nbsp;</p><p>Some readers may miss the tactile experience of flipping through physical pages and the unique smell and feel of a printed book. The sensory aspects of reading are an integral part of the traditional reading experience that digital books cannot fully replicate. And I am firmly in this camp. With the internet and social media just a tap away, readers may find it challenging to stay focused on the story at hand, leading to reduced immersion and enjoyment.</p><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Ultimately, the decision to embrace Ebooks or stick with traditional printed books is personal, and each option has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It is well worth doing research on your potential audience. Nothing informs more than objective data and real world conversations with Gatekeepers and Stakeholders.&nbsp;</p><h3>Visual Hierarchy</h3><p>Creating a strong visual hierarchy is essential for guiding the viewer's eye and conveying the most important information. Utilize size, color, and placement to establish a clear hierarchy of elements on the cover. As an example, we used this image for one of our books and then inserted it as a little page corner motif image to reinforce the book's theme. We test all our cover concepts and image selection and placement with at least five of our reviewers. As an example, we wanted to use this photograph in a sports book we were designing, but our reviewers came back and felt it was 'a little overcrowded' and that the 'colours might not work on a matt finish.' <p>I'm pleased to report that indie publishing has been on the rise in recent years, offering authors an alternative to traditional publishing houses. With the ever-changing landscape of the publishing industry, both traditional and indie, it's important to stay ahead of the game and anticipate at least some of the future trends. Here are the top five projections for indie publishing in 2024 as I see them unfolding.</p><h3>1. Continued Growth of E-books</h3><p>As technology continues to advance, the popularity of E-books is expected to soar. With the convenience of digital reading devices and apps, indie authors will have a significant opportunity to reach a wider audience. Revenue from ebook sales reached $1.95 billion dollars in 2022, down 8.5% compared to 2021 but global revenue in the E-books segment of the media market was forecast to continuously increase between 2023 and 2028 by in total 1.3 billion U.S. dollars (+9.52 percent). After the sixth consecutive increasing year, the indicator is estimated to reach 15.5 billion U.S. dollars and therefore a new peak in 2028 trend is likely to lead to a surge in e-book sales for independent publishers. Five Projections for Indie Publishing in 2024

<p>When it comes to creating a visually captivating book, working with a talented illustrator is crucial. Book illustrations can bring a story to life, engage readers of all ages, and add an extra layer of depth to the narrative. We've used illustrators many times across different genres. However, collaborating with an illustrator requires careful consideration and effective communication to ensure that the final product meets your vision and the standards of your publisher. We've had introductory letters in from illustrators where work is just not of the quality one would expect and there are many reasons for this which I've written about elsewhere. We have also had letters of introduction from illustrators whose work is outstanding. Some essential considerations when working with book illustrators include:</p><h3>Understanding Your Vision</h3><p>Before you work with an illustrator, it's important to clearly understand your start, middle, and end vision for the illustrations. Three things are key in this: the tone, style, and overall aesthetic you want to convey through the artwork. Providing the illustrator with a detailed brief or mood board can help them grasp your vision and create illustrations that align with your expectations. You cannot and should not expect an illustrator to 'get' your concept...because it is your concept, not theirs, your imagination, not theirs...be clear about your core ideas and visions. In the example below, the tone of the illustration is nostalgic.
