<h3>Introduction</h3><p>I've edited 100+ books at this point in my career and I've learned quite a lot along the way. I've been presented with so many scripts I could fill a landfill - except I dispose of such materials as organically as possible. Nonetheless, some of those scripts really stand out and there's definitely a pattern. In this blog, I'll focus on five top tips I've seen work really well for authors.&nbsp;</p><h3>Understand Your Characters</h3><p>Before you start writing, take time to understand your characters. I mean, really understand them. Know intimately their backgrounds, motivations, and goals. This will help you create more realistic and relatable characters. We had a script into our offices recently where it became clear just ten pages in that the newbie author had not researched their book landscape with wholly underdeveloped characters. In one case, a character had 'piercing blue eyes' on page 3 and by page 9 they had miraculously morphed into 'mahogany brown'.&nbsp;</p><p>Ask yourself questions about their past, their fears, and their dreams. Write down these details to refer back to as you develop your story. Readers tend to remember events more than depictions.&nbsp;</p><h3>Create Flaws and Strengths</h3><p>Perfect characters are boring. Soooo boring. Give your characters both strengths and flaws to make them more human. These imperfections can drive the plot and create tension. Think here of Shakespeare's King Lear or Shylock as wonderful examples.&nbsp;</p><p>Think about how these traits affect their decisions and relationships. This will add depth to your characters and make them more engaging.</p><h3>Use Dialogue Effectively</h3><p>Dialogue is a powerful tool for character development. Use it to reveal personality, background, and emotions. Pay attention to how your characters speak and what they say.</p><p>Each character should have a unique voice. This can be achieved through word choice, sentence structure, and rhythm.</p><h3>Show Character Growth</h3><p>Characters should evolve over the course of your novel. Show how they change in response to the events of the story. This growth can be positive or negative, but it should be believable.</p><p>Document their journey and highlight key moments that contribute to their development. This will make your characters feel more dynamic.</p><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>Developing compelling characters takes time and effort. By understanding your characters, showing their traits through actions, creating flaws and strengths, using dialogue effectively, and showing character growth, you can create characters that readers will remember.</p><p>Keep these tips in mind as you write, and your characters will come to life on the page.</p>

<p>Discovering new book titles can be an exciting journey for readers. With so many options available, it helps to know where to look and what to consider. Here is a simple guide to help you find your next great read.</p><h3>Visit Local Bookstores</h3><p>It may seem obvious, but local bookstores are really great places to find new books especially ones publishes by the indie presses. Staff recommendations and curated sections often highlight new or noteworthy titles. You'll often find handwritten notes placed up over a bookshelf with carefully written reviews of new titles, and this is always a fascinating sneak peek. How Readers Discover New Book Titles: A Simple Guide

<p>Review of the Play 'Unspeakable Conversations' Galway International Arts Festival, Galway, Ireland (July, 2024).&nbsp;</p><p>Last night I attended a play in The Druid Theatre in Galway, Ireland titled ‘Unspeakable Conversations’. As university students in the 80s, we studied philosophy and a module was ‘Animal Rights’ with one of the key theorists being Peter Singer. So, I was fascinated to see how complex material would be approached in the play in terms of his discourse.</p><p><br>It’s a thought-provoking and deeply moving play adapted from Harriet McBryde Johnson's essay of the same name, which recounts her encounters and debates with Princeton professor Peter Singer, known for his controversial views on disability and euthanasia. The play brings to life the intense and often uncomfortable dialogue between Johnson, a fierce disability rights advocate who lives with a severe neuromuscular disease, and Singer, who questions the moral implications of allowing severely disabled infants to live.</p><p><br>The strength of "Unspeakable Conversations" lies in its ability to humanise a philosophical debate that could easily become abstract and detached. The playwrights have done an excellent job of preserving Johnson's sharp wit, intelligence, and vulnerability, making her a compelling and relatable protagonist. It forces viewers to examine their own beliefs and prejudices, encouraging a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of disabled individuals. Wonderful to have such thoughtful material on show during the Galway International Arts Festival 2024.</p><p><br></p>

Review of the Play, 'Unspeakable Conversations'

<p>I had the pleasure of attending Stephen Averill's exhibition, 'My Life in 12 Sleeves', at the Galway International Arts Festival 2024 over the weekend. Did I like it? Well, yes, I did...It's a really compelling journey through the visual and cultural landscape of the music industry, seen through the eyes of one of Ireland's most influential graphic designers. Known for his iconic album covers for bands like U2, Mary Coughlan, The Virgin Prunes, Aslan, Something Happens! Depeche Mode and more, Averill's design catalogue, is not just art; it is a narrative of the evolution of music and its symbiotic relationship with visual aesthetics over five decades. At the heart of his conversation with the audience is that these record sleeves are more than mere protective casings; they are storytelling devices that capture the ethos of their time. Averill’s ability to convey the essence of an album and the identity of the band through imagery is masterfully highlighted. Each album cover shown on the screen is accompanied by in-depth narratives and personal anecdotes, providing insight into the creative process and the challenges faced during production and this resonated with the audience. This personal touch adds a layer of intimacy, making the participants feel (more) connected to the stories behind the sleeves as there's nothing quite like the audience being allowed to ask questions which, of course, I did on the theme of copyright. His designs not only influenced, to lesser and greater degrees, the visual identity of the bands ad artists themselves, but also left an indelible mark on popular culture. The exhibition delves into the social and cultural contexts of each era, showing how album covers became iconic symbols and a form of artistic expression that transcended music.
