A Deep Dive into Catarina Lilliehöök's forthcoming book, 'The Spirit Dragon's Keeper'. The protagonist, Mi La, experiences several overarching themes that connect her past and present, including her identity, destiny, family, and the impact of her unique abilities. Identity: Mi La struggles with her sense of self, torn between her Sámi heritage and her life at Long Si. She was once a reindeer herder, "Lu Mi La", a name that is a transcription of sounds and has a deep connection to her homeland. However, she is also called "Little Secret" a name given to her by Master Li. Her past is rooted in nature, with stories of her grandmother and the land and her present is defined by her training in martial arts and Chinese traditions. She grapples with how her past fits into her present, and questions whether she is still a "reindeer herder". She is a "mule herder" to Yong Da and sometimes feels like a detested orphan. Destiny: Mi La's destiny is a recurring theme. Master Li tells her that her destiny is at Long Si, and it is to study and learn. She is told that her destiny is linked to the Spirit Dragon. Her destiny, she learns, involves the need to balance her yin (feminine) energy with Hidden Eye's yang (masculine) energy. She was taken by the Nefarious because she had paranormal skills to be used by them, which also explains why Master Li rescued her. Mi La's destiny as "Spirit Dragon’s Keeper" is not a straight road and is tied to the need to overcome her hardest opponent, which is herself. She initially has many questions about her destiny and later finds out that it is to help Hidden Eyes. Family: Her family in Sápmi is a strong presence in her mind. She remembers her grandmother's stories and the bond she had with her reindeer. Her parents are a source of pain for her, as she is reminded by Yong Da that they left her. She also forms a deep bond with one of the temple cats, her sister who she refers to as Habllek, a name that stems from the Sami language. Her mother's warnings echo in her mind, "Be careful, Mila. Be careful not to show". At Long Si, Cook Ma becomes a kind of mother figure for her and she feels a sense of responsibility to protect Wei Wan like a younger brother and in this, she recalls her brother, Olli. She feels both "a tug and pull" to Master Li, whom she is also sometimes in conflict with, and feels betrayed by. Unique Abilities: Mi La possesses unique abilities that connect her past and present. In her past, her mother was scared of her "glimmering hands", and her grandmother was cautious of her ability to see hearts. Mi La’s ability to see people's "heart orbs", and how emotion affects these orbs is something she recalls from the past and continues to experience in her present at Long Si. She also can borrow the strength and skills of others. It is through her power that she can call Hidden Eyes and become aware of her identity as Seikhar, a "Child of the Northern Lights". Mi La also learns that her ability was the reason she was targeted by the Nefarious. These themes illustrate the complexity of Mi La's journey, as she grapples with her origins, discovers her purpose, and develops her powers, which ultimately shape her path toward her destiny as the Spirit Dragon's Keeper. -Harry Hickey, February 2025.

Book Review: 'Kill the Company' by Lisa Bodell (Published: 2012).&nbsp; Overview In 'Kill the Company', Lisa Bodell presents a compelling argument for why organisations must actively embrace change by eliminating outdated processes, bureaucracy, and complacency. She advocates for a culture of innovation, where businesses continuously challenge the status quo rather than merely maintaining it. Through practical exercises, real-world examples, and actionable frameworks, Bodell provides tools that help companies cultivate a more agile, creative, and forward-thinking workforce. Key Themes Eliminating Bureaucratic Waste – Bodell argues that organisations often stifle creativity by clinging to redundant processes and rigid hierarchies. She proposes a "kill the company" exercise, where employees actively brainstorm ways to dismantle their own organisation—forcing them to think about threats, inefficiencies, and areas for transformation. Encouraging Simplification – Overcomplication is one of the biggest barriers to innovation. Bodell stresses the importance of streamlining workflows, cutting unnecessary meetings, and creating a corporate environment that prioritises efficiency over formality. Empowering Employees – Innovation should not be confined to leadership; employees at every level should feel encouraged to contribute ideas and challenge outdated practices. The book provides strategies for fostering an open culture where critical thinking and problem-solving are valued. Making Change a Habit – Rather than treating innovation as a one-time initiative, Bodell argues that organisations must embed adaptability into their DNA. She provides tools and exercises to help leaders sustain a mindset of continuous improvement. Relevance in 2025 So, a main concern is, does the book still have relevancy over a decade later? Well, despite being published in 2012, I'd argue that 'Kill the Company' remains highly relevant in 2025, particularly in an era marked by (even more) rapid technological advancements, AI integration, and economic uncertainty. Businesses that fail to eliminate inefficiencies and encourage innovation risk falling behind more agile competitors. And, there are many in every industry! I need only reference the continuing rise of AI and automation – As AI continues to fundamentally reshape all manner of industries, Bodell’s call for adaptability is, perhaps, more critical than ever. Companies must continuously re-evaluate roles, processes, and skills to remain competitive. Remote and Hybrid Work Challenges – With many companies still adjusting (and lots of them badly!) to hybrid work models, Bodell’s principles of simplification and efficiency apply directly to modern workplace dynamics. Reducing unnecessary bureaucracy is vital for maintaining productivity across dispersed teams. Oh, how I detest the culture of useless lengthy meeting after meeting. Corporate Culture and Employee Engagement – In an age where employee experience is a key factor in retention, organisations that foster a culture of innovation and empowerment are more likely to attract and retain top talent. And, that's despite the culture of movement Millennials and Gen Z hold dear. Disruption in Every Industry – Whether it's the impact of climate change, shifting consumer behaviours, or geopolitical uncertainties, businesses today face constant disruption. Bodell’s emphasis on proactive change rather than reactive survival is essential. Limitations While Kill the Company is filled with valuable insights, some critiques include: Lack of Deep Case Studies – The book offers compelling anecdotes but I feel lacks in-depth analysis of how large-scale organisations have successfully implemented its principles. <h3>&nbsp; Introduction</h3> We live in a world where consumerism has become the dominant force shaping our lives, dictating not just what we buy but who we are. Society rewards accumulation, material success, and status symbols while undervaluing creativity, exploration, and meaning. But this cultural obsession with consumption has profound implications for mental health, exacerbating anxiety and depression while suppressing the very creative impulses that could lead to fulfillment. From Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932), which portrays a dystopian society anesthetised by pleasure and consumption, to Banksy’s more recent satirical artwork critiquing capitalism, creative minds have continuously resisted the lure of consumer culture. In contrast, the research and lived experience are clear; when society values creativity over materialism, people experience deeper self-actualisation and emotional well-being.<h3>Consumerism and Mental Health: The Invisible Trap</h3> Numerous psychological studies have linked materialism with increased anxiety and depression. Kasser and Ryan (1996) found that individuals who prioritise extrinsic goals, such as wealth and status, report lower psychological well-being and higher distress. The constant cycle of wanting, acquiring, and feeling dissatisfied creates a void that cannot be filled with more purchases.Social media exacerbates this phenomenon. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have turned self-worth into a commodity, where one’s value is measured in likes, shares, and brand collaborations. People curate their lives not based on creative fulfillment but on what sells. The commercialisation of music has led to an overproduction of formulaic, algorithm-friendly songs designed to generate streams rather than provoke thought or emotion. Compare this to artists like Bob Dylan or Nina Simone, who used their music as a form of social and personal expression rather than a means to chase chart success. The modern industry’s prioritisation of virality over artistry contributes to feelings of creative stagnation among musicians and a passive, less engaged audience.<h3>Creativity as an Antidote to Anxiety</h3> Unlike consumerism, which thrives on dissatisfaction, creativity fosters mindfulness and a sense of purpose. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990) describes creativity as a gateway to “flow,” a mental state in which people lose themselves in meaningful work. This state has been linked to reduced anxiety and greater life satisfaction.Literature has often served as a counterforce to consumerism’s emptiness. Writers like George Orwell and Virginia Woolf used their work to challenge societal norms rather than conform to market trends. Woolf’s 'A Room of One’s Own' (1929) is a testament to the importance of personal space and creative freedom—concepts that are at odds with a consumerist culture that demands constant engagement and consumption. Disconnect from Market-Driven Validation – Likes and follows are poor substitutes for genuine creative fulfillment. Focus on authenticity rather than virality. Reclaim Time for Reflection – Consumer culture thrives on distraction. Make space for contemplation, whether through reading, journaling, or spending time in nature. Support Independent Artists – Instead of mass-produced entertainment, invest time in discovering independent writers, musicians, authors and artists who challenge mainstream narratives. Rewriting the Narrative The culture of consumerism wants us to believe that happiness is one purchase away. But the truth is, no amount of material accumulation can replace the deep sense of satisfaction that comes from creating, exploring, and expressing. Art, music, and literature remind us that meaning is not something we buy—it’s something we make. By choosing creativity over consumption, we do more than just break free from anxiety and depression. Additionally, concerns about overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and its link to skin cancer led to a reevaluation of sunbathing practices. Consequently, the once-common hospital sun decks gradually disappeared from medical facilities. Studies have shown that exposure to daylight can enhance mood, reduce stress, and even shorten hospital stays.
